How did purse rolls first come to be?
Purse rolls are relatively new. They were first conceived in the mid ‘80s as a solution to the issue of transportation.
The ideal purse rolls held a sufficient number of pads, but they were also compact and not very cumbersome. They were basically a container that was small enough to fit in a suitcase, but that could still guarantee a high-quality display.
The first purse rolls would measure 17 x 24 cm (6.7 x 9.5 inch), they held soft pads for chains and necklaces and they were called “panettone” just like the traditional, Italian Christmas cake. You could fit many of these rolls inside a suitcase and they made for a good and efficient jewel display.
Trade shows and events about gold and jewels grew exponentially in the 90s and, as a consequence, so did the trips of representatives. Purse rolls have, therefore, evolved so that they could be used with all kinds of pads in order to guarantee an even more complete and engaging jewel display.

On the contrary, leatherette is usually picked as outer material. Let’s not forget that these rolls were specifically designed to be used in countless trips, shows and trade fairs, so they have to resist scratching and wear and tear.
Purse rolls also provide the highest flexibility as far as the number of pads is concerned. The Velcro closure being adjustable, a roll can hold a minimum of 6 to 12 or 13 pads. By customizing the rolls, one can, of course, decide how many pads to insert in the roll.
Once the roll is unfolded, it is up to the representative to arrange pads either one next to another, to provide a general overview of the whole collection, or individually. The display will be efficient and visually impactful either way.
